introduction
Poetry for me began as a way to express feelings I couldn’t describe in their entirety. I started writing poems in September of 2022, and then not again until June of 2023. The poem I wrote in June is “Poem titled sorry” and was inspired by an open letter to a friend after a nasty fight but I couldn’t get the words out and never sent it. One night around 2am I tossed and turned with this mix of indecision and guilt so I grabbed my phone and opened the notes app. The poem flowed out in less than 15 minutes. The experience for me was both relieving and exhilarating, while my feelings hadn’t been resolved, a sort of weight lifted off of my shoulders. I hadn’t written another poem until September 2023 when I took a poetry class. Since then I’ve only written poems when the inspiration strikes. The poems come when they come and I’ll jot them down in my notes app. I prefer to write somewhat of open-ended poems where there’s plenty of room for interpretation and I just use punctuation and capitalization to guide my readers where I want them. I’ve only ever made two typos and they enhanced the poem so I’ve included them on purpose.
